You’ll never believe it, but I used to be good at making websites. Like, really good. But it’s been a long time since I’ve used WordPress, and the new way of doing things (which probably isn’t even new anymore) really isn’t getting along with me particularly well.
There were a few things I really wanted to do with this website. These should, by virtue of the fact that it’s 2024 and I work in IT, be trivial accomplishments. But the opportune word there was should. It’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not I’ll succeed in the below tasks, but if you’re curious where the project currently stands as of May 13th, then here you have it:
Create a basic functioning webpage(always start your list with something you can cross off right away – so as to gaslight yourself into thinking you’re more accomplished than you are).- Create a functional merch store for things like the coasters, stickers, etc.
- Create galleries that are both functional and easily navigable.
Now, if this blog entry is, somehow, the first thing you’ve landed on here then you might be thinking to yourself, “Well, you’re three for three my good man! Kudos!” But no. No kudos. I stand zero chance of getting the merch store running at this stage of the game because, as silly as it sounds, I can’t get my buttons to do anything when you click on them. Legit.
“But I clicked on buttons to get here!” You might be arguing out loud, to yourself, alone in your room reading the website of a stressed content creator (all good habits; keep it up!), but the buttons you clicked on to get here were part of my starting templates, or WordPress’s older systems that I still vaguely remember how to use. If you go to the Japan Gallery (oh good, I still know how to make functioning links) right now, at the bottom you’ll see some orange buttons I added to the page via WordPress’s block editor GUI. They do all the things a normal button should do: change appearance on mouse over, click, present themselves as buttons, etc… But they forgot the whole “take you somewhere” part.
And to be clear: It’s not for lack of gumption on my part. I’ve set them to be links. I truly have no idea what else to do. Perhaps a nap?
…a nap sounds good.
As an update: I figured it out. It was way too tired that night.
